Without timely treatment, a large cavity will continue to spread throughout the tooth. In time, the decay can compromise and infect the pulp or root of the tooth. This might result in tooth loss or extraction to treat the pain and prevent a dangerous infection from forming in the gums.
When your gums are ready, your dentist, Dr. Michael McBride, can help you replace the tooth with a dental implant. The implant is technically a titanium abutment that is screwed into the natural bone structure of your mouth.
The titanium abutment can often be installed in a single appointment. Most people choose to be deeply sedated for their own comfort. This means you will need to arrange to have someone drive you home afterward.
To insert the implant, a small incision will be made in your gums to gain direct access to your jawbone. A narrow channel will be made in the bone and a titanium abutment will be screwed into place. Titanium is known to be biologically safe. The implant will eventually fuse with the surrounding bone structure to create a very strong anchor for an eventual dental crown.
Once your gums have healed and the implant has fully fused with the surrounding bone tissues, your dentist will take an impression of the abutment. This will be used as a guide for our professional dental lab technician while they custom craft a crown that is made from porcelain, gold or base metal alloy.
