Best and Worst Candy to Eat on Halloween

Halloween is the one time of year where children, teenagers, and adults have a fun excuse to wear costumes, watch scary movies, and eat loads of candy. Because of all of the excitement surrounding the holiday, it’s easy to overindulge in candy and forget the negative effects it has on the teeth and gums. Being aware of the least harmful candy will help adults make guilt-free choices when serving candy to children and consuming candy themselves.

Worst Candy to Eat on Halloween

Sour candy is one of the worst types of candy to pass out to children on Halloween, especially since this candy can be highly acidic. The acid eventually weakens and damages tooth enamel, which makes the teeth more susceptible to cavities. If cavities are left untreated, the teeth will decay, become loose, and eventually fall out. Decay could also lead to gum disease, which also causes tooth loss and gum recession.

Hardy candy should also be avoided on Halloween, especially since it could crack the teeth if not consumed carefully. Because hardy candy is left in the mouth longer, the sugar is able to mix with saliva and soak into the teeth. The bacteria in the mouth then consume the sugar and produce an acid that attacks the tooth enamel. Once the enamel is worn down, the inner layers of the teeth become exposed, making the teeth more sensitive to temperatures and appear discolored.

Sticky and gummy candies are also terrible for the teeth since they’re harder to remove. The substance sits on the teeth for an extended period of time, giving the cavity-causing bacteria a chance to produce acid and attack the teeth.

Best Candy to Eat on Halloween

The best candy to consume on Halloween is chocolate, mainly because it’s the easiest type of candy to wash Best and Worst Candy to Eat on Halloweenoff. Although chocolate is full of sugar, it doesn’t sit on the teeth for extended periods of time the way other candy does.

As long as individuals are brushing twice daily and flossing at least once daily, it’s okay to consume candy on Halloween. One day of fun is not going to ruin an entire year’s worth of healthy momentum. However, if overindulging in candy becomes an everyday habit, that’s when the teeth are put in danger and negatively affected.
