Causes of Tooth Discoloration

As time progresses, it’s natural and sometimes inevitable for teeth to darken depending on certain lifestyles. Understanding why teeth darken and how to prevent them from doing so will help individuals maintain the bright smile they desire.

Reasons Why Teeth Darken

Certain types of foods and drinks are one of the main reasons why teeth may darken over time. Some drinks that are more prone to staining teeth include coffee, tea, soda, and wine. The reason these liquids are able to stain teeth is that the outer layer of the tooth, known as enamel, contains microscopic holes that can hold tiny particles of drinks and foods. The pigment from darker foods and drinks seep into the holes and eventually lead to discoloration if not treated properly. Foods that are known for darkening teeth over time include certain fruits and vegetables.

There are some individuals who may not indulge in coffee, tea, soda, or wine but still suffer from stained teeth. Some other causes could be excessive tobacco use. Smoking or chewing tobacco for prolonged periods of time definitely darkens teeth as the years roll by. Because cigarettes contain nicotine and tar, smokers are likely to suffer from brown teeth if they don’t make certain lifestyle changes.

Causes of Tooth DiscolorationFor those who don’t consume stain-causing beverages and also don’t smoke but are still experiencing yellow teeth, the cause could also be poor dental hygiene. If individuals don’t brush twice daily and floss at least once daily, they’re more likely to develop yellow teeth over time. Brushing and flossing help remove plaque and excess food particles from in between the teeth.

For those who maintain a healthy oral care regimen but are still experiencing stained teeth, the cause could also be certain types of diseases. There are certain illnesses that have a negative effect on enamel and dentin, which lead to darkened teeth. For example, those who have cancer and are undergoing chemotherapy have a higher chance of experiencing darkened teeth.

Those who are on specific medications, such as tetracycline and doxycycline may experience tooth discoloration.

Because there are various reasons why people can experience tooth discoloration, it’s very important for individuals to follow up with their local dentist to discuss any lifestyle changes that could be having a negative effect on their teeth. An experienced dental professional will be able to offer various treatment options and preventative methods to discontinue the possibility of more discoloration over time.
