Dentist-Developed Dental Checklist for Kids

Taking proper care of your child’s teeth and teaching them to adhere to the guidelines for proper dental hygiene will help give them confidence in the benefits of routine oral care that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Dental professionals who have spent many years working with kids on their oral hygiene know the best way to teach your children how to care for their own teeth.

Teach Them to Brush and Floss When They Are Young

Dentist-Developed Dental Checklist for Kids

One of your responsibilities as a mom or dad is to ensure that your child is taught how to brush their teeth and floss efficiently as soon as they are old enough to learn. When they are about 6-years-old, your child should be able to go brush their teeth, rinse, and floss without you having to supervise them.

Show them how to brush their teeth in a steady circular motion and explain to them how important it is to make sure that they include their back teeth when they brush as well.

Kids also need to learn the importance of flossing. Teach them how to floss the right way by actually showing them the proper technique. Then, ask them to demonstrate what you just did on their own teeth. Working with your child for a few months will help increase their awareness of the importance of a clean and healthy mouth.

Use a Kid-Safe Mouthwash

Some kinds of mouthwash list alcohol as an active ingredient. They also contain various other harsh ingredients that aren’t intended for young kids. You can find several brands of kid-safe mouthwash in your local grocery or drug store that are specifically designed for children and are perfectly safe for them to use on a daily basis.

Don’t Skip the Fluoride Treatment

Research has proven that fluoride helps strengthen the enamel on your teeth and protects them from cavities. Talk to your dental professional about the treatment options that are available and schedule an appointment for your child to evaluate their oral health and the possible need for additional procedures in the future.

Make an Appointment for an Orthodontic Evaluation

You should also make an appointment for an orthodontic assessment for your child before they turn seven. This will help make certain that they are on target for exemplary tooth and gum health and on planning ahead for future orthodontic procedures.
