After consuming food, leftover particles remain on the teeth and mix with saliva to form plaque. Gingivitis often results from excess plaque buildup but can be reversed with professional treatment, in addition to regular brushing and flossing. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can develop into a more severe periodontal disease that could cause tooth loss and other health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease.
Flossing is the best way to prevent periodontal disease because it cleans between areas of the teeth that toothbrushes are unable to reach, like underneath the gum line.
It’s best to use floss with the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure that the product is effective and nonhazardous. Products with the ADA seal assures buyers that the product has been thoroughly evaluated by scientists and experts. The seal also guarantees that the floss will properly remove bacteria and decrease the chances of developing gingivitis if used properly.
It’s very important to refrain from reusing the same floss strand. After using once, the strand should be tossed in the trash can or flushed down the toilet. After its initial use, floss strands can weaken, lose effectiveness, and reinsert bacteria back into the mouth.
The order in which individuals choose to floss and brush is unimportant. Some people may prefer to floss first to make sure the bristles scrape away all of the particles and bacteria. Others may feel more comfortable flossing after to remove everything the brush missed.
Individuals can floss at any time of day as long as they do it at least once. Some people prefer flossing right before bed because they feel better going to sleep with a clean mouth, while others prefer to floss in the morning or mid-day.
