Is Orthodontic Treatment Right for You?

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

It’s common in America for children’s permanent teeth to grow in misaligned. However, if they continue to go untreated, oral health issues could develop over time. A popular solution for misaligned teeth is orthodontic treatment, which is a way of straightening or moving the teeth to improve their appearance and function. Orthodontic treatment also helps with the long-term health of the teeth, gums and jaw joints by evening out the bite pressure amongst the teeth.

Crowded or crooked teeth affect the way the teeth bite together and make them difficult to clean. When they don’t align properly, the jaw muscles strain, which can lead to jaw, joint, and headache problems. Orthodontic treatment will even out the bite and reduce muscle strain.

What Are Some Orthodontic Treatment Options?

Is Orthodontic Treatment Right for You?A variety of treatment options have developed over the years to suit each individual’s unique needs. Options include braces, clear aligners, archwires, retainers, elastics, and more. Dentists and orthodontists have the expertise to assess all possibilities for an individual based on their age, jaw imbalances, tooth size, and more. For example, some individuals may have too many teeth in their mouth and must have some removed as part of their treatment. Others might have an overbite or underbite straining their jaw muscles.

When is the Best Time to Get Orthodontic Treatment?

The best time to receive orthodontic treatment is during childhood right after the permanent teeth grown in. The length of time it takes to straighten out the teeth varies with each individual. Some people might only need six months while others require a few years.

The success of the cosmetic treatment depends on the dental specialist and the individual being treated. It’s essential that patients follow all after-care instructions and maintain their appointments. It’s normal for the teeth to slightly shift during the retention period, which is when patients must wear retainers. However, as long as patients wear their retainers regularly, the teeth should not shift back to how they were prior to treatment.

Throughout the orthodontic treatment process, it’s important for patients to maintain a clean mouth. All patients should be cleaning their teeth daily so that bacteria and food particles don’t get stuck in the braces.

It’s also important to brush delicately so that the braces don’t break. It’s also recommended that patients decrease their sugar intake because sugary, sticky, and hard food could permanently damage the teeth.
