Maintaining Oral Health: What Not to Do

In order to maintain a healthy mouth, it’s essential to understand the dos and don’ts of oral care don’ts to avoid complications in the future that could be costly and painful. Many may believe that all they have to do is brush their teeth and floss daily to keep their mouths healthy. Even though those two steps are important components to keeping the gums and teeth healthy, there are other things that people should avoid so that their brushing and flossing is more beneficial.

Don’t Brush too Hard

When brushing the teeth, it’s important not to brush too aggressively because doing so could damage the gums and lead to gum recession. It’s also important not to purchase toothbrushes with hard bristles. Even though harder bristles may seem as though they are effectively removing all of the bacteria from the teeth and gums, they could be more harmful than beneficial. Using a toothbrush with soft bristles is effective enough to properly clean the teeth without damaging them.

Don’t Forget to Floss

It’s also important for individuals not to skip flossing. Flossing at least once every day will remove all of the bacteria, debris, and plaque that the toothbrush was unable to scrape off. Not doing so could cause a buildup of bacteria that could turn into calculus. The longer calculus is left untreated, the more at risk individuals are of developing gingivitis. As individuals age, their gum tissue decreases, which leaves larger gaps between their teeth for food to get stuck in. Therefore, it’s important to floss since toothbrushes aren’t designed to clean that deeply.

Don’t Maintain a Poor Diet

Individuals should also avoid eating poorly, which has a major effect on their oral health. The sugar in these types of foods turns into bacteria that contains acid, which attacks the outer layer of the teeth, also known as the enamel. Even for those who have dental anxiety, it’s still important for a professional to thoroughly examine the mouth to ensure that no signs of gum disease are developing. Even if there aren’t any noticeable symptoms, there could still be complications developing that are only detectable by a professional.
