Natural Cleaning Methods for Retainers

Anyone who has ever had braces knows plenty about retainers. Retainers are a dental device that is used to help keep your teeth aligned after you have had your braces removed. Orthodontists typically recommend that you wear a retainer for as long as possible in order to stop your teeth from shifting back, so it is vital that you keep them clean and in good working order.

To keep their retainers in the best condition possible, a lot of people prefer to stick to natural cleaning methods instead of traditional cleaners that are full of chemicals. If you have been looking for a natural way to clean your retainers, rest assured there are plenty of methods for you to choose from.

Natural Cleaning Methods

Clean Your Retainers with Water – For a fast, on-the-go way to get your retainers clean,  you can simply rinse your retainers off with water. You can also give them a swift wash in your mouth by swirling the water around, and then spitting it out.

Brush Your Retainers Gently with Toothpaste – As long as your retainer does not specifically say to not use toothpaste, you can easily brush them at the same time as you brush your teeth. Make certain that you select a soft-bristled toothbrush and never ever use any kind of whitening toothpaste. When you are all done brushing, run the retainers under the water until all residue from the toothpaste has been washed away.

Clean Your Retainers With Sodium Bicarbonate – Sodium bicarbonate, more generally known as baking soda, is a common ingredient found in most households that is good for a wide variety of uses, one of which is cleaning your retainer. Baking soda is a natural disinfectant that can be used to clean and whiten your retainers.

To clean and sanitize your retainers using baking soda, you create a paste by mixing the powder with water until it is thick enough to coat your retainers. Then, with a soft-bristled toothbrush, lightly scrub the thick paste all over the retainers. Be careful that you rinse them completely and do not leave any baking soda residue behind.
