What Type of Dentures Will Fit My Needs?

Different people have very different needs when it comes to issues of dental health. This fact especially applies to people who are considering dentures. If you have discussed dentures with your dentist and decided that this is the right choice for you, your unique situation will determine the kind of dentures you need. Some people may be missing a few teeth, while others may be missing all of their teeth. Whatever your situation, there are dentures that can be created to fit your needs.

Different Types of Dentures

  • Partial Dentures – For those who are only missing a few teeth, partial dentures may be the right choice for you. These dentures can feature metal clasps that are affixed to your teeth. They can also attach to crowns so that they will stay put in your mouth.
  • Full Dentures – If you are missing all of your teeth, then you will want a set of complete dentures. These will stay in your mouth by being attached to an acrylic plate that sits on top of the roof of your mouth.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures – Implant-supported dentures are held in your mouth by implants that are placed in your gums. They will take careful fittings from your dentist to fit in your mouth, and dentists will put the implants in your mouth before you can wear these dentures.

Other Types of Dentures for Different Situations

There are a few other types of dentures you may come across in your research on the topic. Most people will have one of the three types of permanent dentures listed above, but there are some unique exceptions.

  • Immediate Dentures – These dentures are fitted soon after an extraction. If someone is unable to get a fitting for dentures following the removal of a very visible tooth, this could be a good option. There is no need to walk around feeling self-conscious about a missing tooth that everyone can see. Immediate dentures will help relieve any potential embarrassment until you can schedule a fitting for a more permanent solution.
  • Flexible dentures – For those who need a set of partial dentures, you may be able to choose a set of flexible dentures. These are durable and comfortable to wear but can be more expensive than a standard set of partial dentures. Be sure to talk to your dentist to see if this option is available to you.
